One of the things that makes camping special is that there are new sights and sounds and smells to enjoy as you spend time outside. Here are some of the things I remember often hearing while camping:

  • The sound of an air mattress inflating in the darkness
  • Children splashing in the lake
  • Cranky neighbors kvetching
  • Fires smoldering and restarting late at night
  • Water boiling over
  • Country music in the distance
  • Whistling campers
  • Bad guitar and singalongs
  • Generators chugging
  • Loons calling on the lake
  • Diesel pickup trucks starting
  • Tricycle wheels on the road
  • Whirring of the fan in the camper
  • Songs of a nearby ice cream truck
  • An F15 flying overhead
  • Dragonflies buzzing by
  • Rain on the camper
  • People talking in french
  • The winds rustling through the leaves
  • Rock ’n roll music played too loud
  • The sizzling sounds of cooking bacon and eggs
  • Water gurgling in a creek
  • Couples fighting while putting up/taking down tents
  • The calling out as the ice or wood truck approaches
  • The buzz of cicadas
  • Squeaky and sobbing children
  • Dogs barking
  • Birds singing in the trees
  • Cars on the road buzzing by
  • Scratching in the night as raccoons explore
  • Moms and dads yelling at kids
  • Hammering of tent pegs
  • The dull buzz of chargers
  • Water dripping from the leaves
  • The banging and sweeping and golf cart noises of camp cleanup crews
  • People laughing over games played in the evening
  • The crackling of newly started fires
  • The shrieking of hawks overhead
  • The sound of grass being mown
  • Absolute silence
